Chinese Laundry
London, 2019
Client: London Craft Week: The Future of Craft Exhibition
Material: Hand-Folded Tyvek
Chinese Laundry originated from a practical experiment — testing fireproofing methods for Tyvek during a commercial commission. When suspended vertically, a ‘happy accident’ revealed an unexpected beauty in the underside of our folded forms, an aspect usually concealed.
Commissioned for The Future of Craft at London Craft Week, the installation became an opportunity to celebrate this hidden dimension. Thirty-nine hand-folded Tyvek panels, each up to three metres long, were hung in swathes throughout the space, echoing lines of fabric drying in a traditional laundry.
Visitors were invited to walk between the panels, experiencing the folds at close range as light, movement, and touch activated the material — transforming a technical investigation into an immersive, tactile encounter.
