Gathering

Client: Crafts Council
Materials: Fedrigoni Gold Paper, Steel Cable
Gathering was commissioned by the Crafts Council for Collect at Somerset House, responding to the vertical drama of the five-storey Stamp Staircase. Conceived in the aftermath of prolonged isolation, the work explores collective presence — how individual forms come together to create shared experience.
A single abstract folded unit was developed through hand pinching and gathering with machine scoring, then multiplied into a cascading wall of 125 shimmering elements.
Suspended within a listed building, the installation required extreme lightness and non-invasive fixing, resulting in a 10-metre structure weighing under 35kg.
As visitors ascended the staircase, the gold forms shifted with light and movement, inviting personal interpretation — from flock-like motion to visceral, reflective stillness — and marking a renewed moment of physical gathering.
