Resonance returns Fung + Bedford to Clerkenwell, where the studio's practice first began a decade ago: three large-scale, illuminated pendant lights suspended in the nave of St Bartholomew the Great, one of London's oldest churches, as part of Clerkenwell Design Week. Each bespoke form is hand-folded by us from a single Tyvek sheet up to 8 metres long, rendering a sound wave in three dimensions — distinct origami pleats arising from one complex folding system, simplicity born of intricacy. A twisted LED strip runs through the centre of each piece, doubling as light source and structure, guiding and holding its form without sag while the paper diffuses light through every fold.

Within the stone nave — architecture built to hold centuries of sound, music and memory — the mindful, repetitive rhythm of the folds offers real stillness: an immersive work of art, a space where visitors can hear their own thoughts and sense the passage of time.

“The work has a calmness based on repetition that transforms people when they move into our space.”

— Angela Fung, Dezeen
