Suspended Origami Ceilings
London, 2019
Client: MoreySmith Architects
Materials: Tyvek, Stainless Steel Tension Cables, Magnets, Integrated LED Strip Lighting
This project began as a pilot study exploring how origami principles could operate as a functional architectural system. Commissioned by MoreySmith for a large-scale West End office development, the challenge was to create ceilings that were both sculptural and technically adaptable.
Folded Tyvek panels were suspended from stainless steel tension cables and engineered to concertina, allowing access to the ceiling void while maintaining visual continuity. Linear LED lighting was integrated between folds, using rhythm and repetition to animate the space.
Developed collaboratively on site as the build evolved, the system was rolled out across 40 office ceilings and three circulation areas. The result is an immersive ceiling landscape that enhances light, movement, and everyday experience — offering moments of surprise within a working environment.
