Sora—the Japanese word for sky—originated from a desire to materialise openness and weightlessness within an interior environment. The project began as a formal investigation into how traditional Japanese origami folding could be scaled beyond the hand, while retaining its sense of delicacy and precision.

The primary challenge was reconciling scale with fragility: creating a monumental light form that appears paper-thin, yet performs structurally and technically as a luminaire. Handmade using origami-based construction techniques, the folded surface acts as both structure and diffuser. Integrated linear LED lighting is concealed within the folds, allowing light to emerge softly, as if suspended rather than emitted.

Installed as a floating sculptural centrepiece, Sora transforms its surroundings through shadow, glow, and perceived movement. As viewers pass beneath and around it, the piece shifts from object to atmosphere—inviting quiet contemplation and a sense of spatial calm. Commissioned to blur the boundary between lighting, architecture, and art, Sora reflects Fung + Bedford’s ongoing exploration of folding as a spatial language rather than a decorative gesture.
