“18” began as a spatial translation of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, exploring repetition, phase shift, and emergence through restraint. The work is built from a single twisted paper form defined by eight folds — four mountain, four valley — alternating between 90° and 45° angles. The challenge was to generate complexity without adding elements, allowing variation in height and aperture to produce spatial rhythm.
Through extensive material testing, the form was stretched, compressed, and repeated to create an undulating paper field. Installed as a continuous landscape, the geometry reveals itself only through movement. As viewers shift position, hidden volumes emerge and collapse, producing an optical infinity effect. Subtle tonal changes in the paper further amplify shifts in depth, colour, and perception.
